At the time when the Buddha was preaching Buddhism, he held a lotus flower in front of the public without saying a word, and frowned and smiled occasionally. The people there felt puzzled, while Kassapa Thera was the only one who smiled as the Buddha smiled.
This work combines nihility and reality to create the artistic conception of smiling with a lotus flower in hand, so as to retain the unpolished details while sculpturing. The horizontal lines due to the modelling of the overall shape are unconscious mechanical repetition. The randomness of handcraft as well as the intrinsic order of materials are perfect presentation of the contrast and fusion between sculpture and nature.
